Have you hooked up a scanner while running and seen if your anti-knock sensor is operation correctly? That was a big part of my XJ overheating. Fred

I have a code reader/gauge always plugged in ill take a look. I get a code once in a while about the O2 sensor and sometimes about the third cylinder (think I fixed that with a new spark plug)

Ok, just a few weeks away......
Here is where we stand with those who have said they are going:
Me in the 2012 Jeep JK ( Mina meeting me in Silverton) Murrie with Caleb 1998 Jeep XJ Rudi with friend from Germany in 1997 Jeep ZJ Carl Freeman in 1995 Jeep XJ Jessica Taylor in 2014 Toyota 4-Runner (She is coming from Boulder Colorado with Mina) Dane Horak 2005 Toyota Tundra coming from Boulder Colorado
I need to start assigning "group" equipment so if your coming and haven't told me, you need to do it now!
:Group Equipment" are those items which we may all need but in the interest in saving space and weight we don't need each vehicle bringing one. These would include but are not limited to, camp stoves, cooking equipment and utensils incl. grill, Lanterns, Recovery equipment, Community Tarps, washing stations, Tools, sundry auto fluids and repair items and whatever else we decide will help save weight and space.
However, every vehicle must have the following ( And I know some of you don't, so start NOW securing these either by buying or borrowing for the trip.
1. Quality full size spare tire and "plug" kit in case of a flat. Jack and tools to change tire and know how to use them. 2. At least 5 gallons of spare fuel. 3. A 2 meter ham radio, wither a hand held or installed model. If you bring a hand held be sure you have extra batteries or a way of charging from your car. I'm required to tell you that using this radio to broadcast requires you to have a Ham radio License, however listening can be done without a license. On long trips like this it is a necessity to have one so I can communicate where we are turning and to prevent us loosing a vehicle by a wrong turn. Many of the 4-wheel friends have radios and by asking you can probably borrow one for the trip. 4. Check your vehicle out for worn belts, hoses. Loose or partly broken suspension parts. A multi-day trip like this will find the worn or ready to break part and reveal it to you in the most unlikely and undesirable time. 5. Fresh water container, multi gallon type. Do not bring a box of small water containers. Bring one or two larger ones and refill you smaller one you use daily. 6. Any special tools that are unique to your vehicle and would not be in a general tool box. 7. Any special non over the counter, medications you may need. 8. at least 1 box of good clean ( nailess and paintless) firewood, preferably hardwood, but will take whatever you bring. We will be able to replenish our firewood along the way. 9. A way or plan to share with another vehicle, a means to keep your fresh foods cold. Ice box or refg.
Each vehicle and person should needs to provide for themselves:
1. A means of shelter from the weather. That may be that you are sleeping in your vehicle, or a 3 season tent. Don't bring a flimsy summer model that would leak in the event of windy summer high altitude thunder storm. 2. A sleeping bag(s) that will keep you comfortable even if it get cold at night. 3. Layers of clothes (not cotton sweatshirts) that will keep you warm and dry if we run into some wet cold weather. Layer are better than one heavy coat. 4. Shoes that will keep you feet dry and protected if your outside and it's rainy and you have to walk or hike some distance. ( you can bring comfortable sandals for around camp if you wish). 5. Your own food (More on that later) 6. Change of clothes ( Keep this to a minimum) we will get at least once chance to wash during the week. 7. The sun can be intense at higher altitudes ( The average altitude of San Juan County, where we will spend most of our time, is 11,240 ft., which is the highest of any county in the USA. So, you will want to bring a hat, sun glasses and some sun screen.
Meals/Menu Day 1. The group I will be traveling with will leave Whittier early (4am) Saturday August 1st. We will stop briefly for breakfast in route during a gas stop. This will be a "fast food" breakfast type stop. This will also apply to lunch. We will camp Saturday evening just north of Flagstaff Ariz. at an elevation just over 7000 ft. Dinner Saturday evening you will need to have with you when we leave Whittier. Day 2. This would also apply to a easy/fast breakfast Sunday morning when we break camp and head toward Colorado. Lunch Sunday will be in route during a gas stop and will also be a "fast food" type. Dinner Sunday evening will be where we camp and you will need to have already have it packed when we leave Whittier. Anytime we camp, there will be the expectation that we will a campfire. If weather or any other reason does not allow a campfire we will have our "group" camp stoves available. Day 3 (Monday) through Day 8 (Saturday) plan your own meals with the following in mind.
There will be at least two mornings where we will have time for what we call a "Big" breakfast. This could include items like eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast, pancakes etc. You can plan for theses but be flexible as to when they happen as it will depend on our schedule and the location we camp at. Most other morning we will be wanting to break camp and get-a-move'n-along.
Lunches should be easy to fix as most of them will just be stops along the trail.
There will be at lest one dinner we will have in town (Silverton) at a restaurant.
About every two days we will pass through a small community where you will be able to replenish your fresh items (Meats, vegetables, fruits) These small community's will also be where we can top off our fuel tanks and use the public bathrooms. Prices on fresh food won't be Cost-co level, so budget accordingly. When we stop in these small communities for fuel and food, these are not " shopping stops" to check out the local trinkets, t-shirts and souvenirs.
I am planning an extended stop in one of the three larger towns (Silverton, Ouray or Telluride) for showers and personal grooming, sometime during the week. This stop will most likely include a sit down purchased meal stop.
Ok this should keep you busy for a few day. My next post will be assigning group equipment.
Thanks, Fred

I think your supply of propane cans should be enough for all of us, we won't need other to bring more than just one for their stove and lanterns. I would also think that by Friday we should pretty much have everything loaded. It would be good if we had a little as possible on our roof racks to save fule when driving the interstate. Finaly, I got to the forum. Looking forward along with Peter from Germany to the upcoming Colorado trip. This week we plan with Murrie to get the tires, so that I will have better tires than ever Murrie, could I borrow the following items from your "to lend" list? 1. One 5 gallons plastic gas can 2. One tote locker (32x17) 3. One 84x84 light waight tarp 4. As I understand, I also would need 4 tarp "grabbers" and maybe 1 center pole? I also have not yet found a 2 meter ham radio. Fernando offered his builed-in one. However, it would be easier to have a more simple hand-held one. Anyone there to help me with that? I would be interested also in getting (bying) one right away for the future trips. That should be all for my first posting Rudi
