This will be an outstanding trip exploring the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada's along highway 395.
I've scheduled it during the Labor Day week end so many of you will be able to use the holiday weekend.
It hate driving in holiday traffic so the plan is to leave early Friday morning ahead of the traffic and then return early Tuesday morning missing the returning holiday traffic arriving home around noon on Tuesday.
Since the purpose of our trips is to "wheel" and explore, I've planned this trip with lots of time off roading and then camping at higher elevations which should be cooler.
Here is the expected agenda:
Friday - Leave Whittier early (5am) head north through LA and then travel northeast on Hwy 14. We will exit at the Jawbone Canyon Station and start the off road section. Following the trails up to the Southern Sierra's over to Lake Isabella continuing north along the Kern river to the Sherman Pass 4x4 trail. Then up past the Black Rock station to where we will camp in Monache Meadows. (This will be a full day of wheeling)
Saturday - We'll travel back to pavement and then make our way east to Hwy 395, turn north toward Big Pine/Bishop. Depending on who goes (their vehicles and driving skill) we'll take either the harder Big Pine trail or the easier Bishop trail up to the greater Coyote Flats area where we will camp. (this is a holiday weekend and arriving in Coyote Flats on Saturday may limit our choice of where we will camp.
Sunday - Head back to Bishop and then north on 395 where we will take the Sand Canyon trail up Rock Creek canyon to a beautiful unnamed lake. We'll set camp and then those who want to tackle the more difficult Wheeler Ridge trail we leave camp for this afternoon adventure returning later to camp.
Monday - Back down Sand Canyon to Hwy 395 north to the Mammoth area airport where we will head west up the Sierra's to Tobacco Flats. Lunch up on the top and then travel back down to Hwy 395 and the up the Laurel Lakes trail. We will probably set camp on the lower end in the Aspens and then take a day trip up to the lakes and ten back down to camp.
Tuesday - Wake early, break camp and head for home.
I will take the first 6 vehicles who sign up. Don't sign up unless you really know you can make it, after 6 sign up I'll take names on a waiting list in order.
If I don't get 6 vehicles committed by August 20th, I may open the trip up to outsiders on another forum.
Here are some pictures of the places we'll go.
Let me know any questions,
Thanks,
Fred
