Hero2 is having issues. Two weeks ago it pooped out on my while driving. I thought for sure alternator. I had it benched tested and it was fine. Took my 6 month old red top optima to pepboys they said it was bad. Try to return it to Sam's Club and it passed. Took it to interstate and they said it was good. I put everything back in and cleaned all the grounds and everything it ran great beside an 02 sensor code I have had for a while. Today it was hot and humid and it got up to 230. I shut it off and then it won't start. Sounded great but wouldn't turn over. Let it rest for ten minutes and it started right up. I drove up a fireside road. Shut it off and it wouldn't start. I waited ten minutes and it started again. We check compression and all cylinders are good. Regapped spark plug since we had them out. Then I drove 5 miles and the battery light appeared and it seemed like it wanted to shut off. The light appeared for about a day before it pooped out on my while driving before. Any ideas? Can't believe I didn't make it to a Thursday night all summer! Back to work this week:(

Sounds like you need to take it to someplace that can check the battery/charging system as a whole. The breakdown can be anywhere in the system and needs to be isolated. It could be your voltage regulator not allowing current to flow to your battery for charging. I don't remember what year your Jeep is, however, if it's like mine (2001) the voltage regulator is in the PCM. If that is the case and it's bad, you would need a replacement PCM. You may save time and money by having a shop check it out. Once it's diagnosed, you can decide to have the shop fix it or do it yourself. FYI - I have a spare PCM your welcome to try. Of course it's for a 2001 and may not work for your year model. I don't know if it will interchange. May be too many differences.

Thanks Neil. I have a 96 which is a mix of 1st and 2nd generation. Do you have somewhere you recommended to take it?

I use Craigs Automotive in Whittier. They are Chrysler specialists. Very honest and stand behind their work. I've been going there for over twenty five years, after I moved back to the Whittier area. My father used them since they opened in the sixties, until his passing. Craig the original owner retired more than a decade ago. The current owner Dan took over from Craig and has carried on with the same high standards. They are located at 16017 Whittier Blvd., Whittier. Across the street from the Whitwood Car Wash.

We stand behind our work as well. No one would dare stand in front of something we've been working on. Ha!

Just my two cents. I just had a similar problem with my sons VW GTI. It was the Crank shaft position sensor. But we had a code P0335. The car would run fine until it warmed up and then it would shut off, let it cool and it would start up. I know its not a jeep but similar symptoms. Andrew C.

Thanks Andrew... I am getting a code but it's for an o2 sensor. I went to pepboys to get the alternator tested since that's what Ryan was leaning towards after checking it out even though I have had it bench tested a few times. But I go there to late. I'll try again today.

Alternator isn't working whether it's hot or cold now. Took pepboys because that's where the alternator is warranted. They said it's the PCM. Cameron Ordered me an eBay one for my birthday! Anything I should know when installing? Does it need to be reflashed?

Anything I should know when installing? Does it need to be reflashed? I really hope pepboys is right about the PCM and not just finding an excuse not to warranty their product. Did they explain what the PCM has to do with the alternator not charging? As far as install thats a good question, 96 is kind of a bastard year for the XJ because it has OBDII but also has the old body style; the only year to do this. May or may not need to be flashed, i'd just install it and see if it works. Because the mileage is stored in a mechanical odometer (right? your jeep has mechanical odometer?) you shouldn't have to worry about calibrating the miles of your jeep into the new PCM.

The voltage regulator is built into the PCM.

Jeep is alive again after I put in an eBay pcu that Cameron bought me as a Bday present!
Strange now I am hearing like an exhaust leak? when I first hit the gas from a stop. This was happening before the new pcu right after I got it back from PepBoys.

Lol. Maybe a 5.9. It's a crack in the manifold. Anyone want to try to weld it?
