Koko 5? ? whichever Koko trip it is, we will be doing a scouting trip August 15 - 22nd. Mark has chosen the over 600 mile Colorado trail for the next few Koko trips (Broken over 3-4 years) The next actual koko will be summer 2021 but for now I need to check out the trail heads and access to the trail with Mark. We will be exploring the last 123 miles of the Colorado trail. This section roughly runs from where hwy 149 crosses the Continental Divide at Spring Creek Pass to Durango. Some of this trip will be near some of the places we went on our first Colorado trip a few years ago. Most all the biking will be done on single track trails and we will be entering and exiting the high country meeting up with the bikers following jeep trails. Most the trails are rated easy to moderate, but some I have never been on and can't find any rating for them. The Colorado follow the Continental Divide so most our camps will be above tree line and higher altitude. If your interested in coming along with the scouting trip let me know. And let also know your questions. Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Fred,
I have put it on my calendar and have approval for time off from the boss. As long as nothing crazy happens, you can count me in.

I will be going also, unless I roll on the Coyote Flats trip. I have to give Jim back his bolts ;-).

Fred,
It looks like Mike and I will be coming on the trip. Maybe Jim Robbins and Carl. Will we be meeting as a group prior to the trip?

Rudi and Ulanbek ( friend I traveled with in Kyrgyzstan) are coming too.
Bodie said he plans on coming also, this should be a good experience for him.
Looks like well have a good size group.
Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

A few bits of information that will make your planning and packing easier. 1. No need to bring extra fuel, we'll be regularly passing through small communities where we can fill up or top off our tanks. 2. The same would be said for fresh food. In these small communities there is usually a general store where we can buy some fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. I plan on carrying at max, 3 days food. With the exception of a one morning where we will have a "big breakfast" all other mornings will be simple "hot water" breakfasts. Lunches will usually be on the trail somewhere and should be simple and easy to prepare. Dinners "should" be around a campfire, but since this is an "exploring" trip I can make no guarantees. Exploring trips, unlike most other trips you come with me, are on trails and areas I have little or no prior experience. I can't tell you where or necessarily when we will camp each night. Sometimes we will arrive at our evening camp in the dark. The weather can be a factor, be prepared for some possible rain showers. Chose dinners that are easy and quick to prepare. If you like a more prepared and predicable kind of trip, this one isn't for you!Tree line is at lower elevations than here in California, so If you want a evening campfire each vehicle should bring one box of firewood. We need a combination of both hard and soft wood, so let me know what ad how much you are bringing. Bring you wood in a container that we can re-fill when we pass thought a lower elevation and can replenish our supply. As for other community equipment and supplies, I will address that on another post. Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Fred,
DO you know which way we will be taking to Colorado? The I70 or the I40? If we take the I70 Carl and I are thinking of taking off Friday and spending the night in Hurricane then connecting with you in either St. George or Cedar City.

Fred, what time will you be leaving Whittier? I may drive up to southern Utah, the day before and meet you about Cedar City on the 15 Fwy. From la Mirada to Grand junction is about 11 hour drive not including gas and lunch stop. I just did that with my daughter-it was a little grueling. I will bring a crate of wood. Anything else you want me to bring?
