OK Colorado explorers, here is where we stand.
1. Fred and Mina in my JK.
2. Michael Alcorn in his Tacoma and newly repaired RTT.
3. Carl Freeman in his XJ with newly mounted Brown Dog motor mounts
4. Bodie Garside in or last project ZJ, Mark Saucy as "floating" passenger ( As in floating from vehicle to vehicle)
5. Rudi Wiens in one of our prior project ZJ with Ulanbek from Kyrgyzstan.
I will be leaving the Ralph's parking lot at 5 am Saturday morning. ( corner Colima and Whittier Blvd)
Our route will be to take the 60 to the 57, 57 to the 10, 10 to the 15 and then the 15 to the 70. In Grand Junction Colorado we will head south toward Ouray ( called the Switzerland of the Rockies). Just south of Ouray we will hit dirt and cross the San Juan mountains over Engineer Pass to Hwy 149 where we will come to Spring Creek Pass, our starting point of the Colorado Trail.
We will stop for fuel in Barstow and may stop for some kind of breakfast along the way along with lunch.
While this is a "scouting" trip and everyday is "unscripted" I hope to camp Saturday evening near the Utah/Colorado border. This is desert country and the temps should be rather warm all the while driving. Best to make sure your A/C system and engine cooling system is working well. If you suffer a breakdown we're a long ways from home and you will most likely have to be towed to the nearest community for parts and a repair.
Sunday we will travel to the proposed starting point of next Koko mountain bike trip in 2021. We will be traveling to various trail junctions of the Colorado Trail between our starting point and Durango Colorado.
I can provide you with no guarantees where we will camp each night. other than it will be somewhere in the greater San Juan Mountains.
Since we will travel through various communities each day, we will be ale to top off our gas tanks and purchase fresh food every few days. While I'd like to arrive each afternoon/evening at our camp spot prior to sunset it would be wise to plan simple dinners. Figure all breakfast as hot water ones, lunches on the trail (no cooking) and dinners around a campfire.
Each vehicle needs to bring at least one box of firewood. While we will be traveling though forested areas, many of our campspots will be above treeline and any fire we have will have to be with wood we bring.
Once we're in the mountains, evening temps may be cool in the high 50's and daytime temps in the low 70's.
As for group equipment, we will need you to bring and please let me know if your bringing it.
1. Two, two burner stoves. One for use and one for back up.
2. Each vehicle bringing at least one box of firewood.
3. 1 plastic camp table.
4. Cook kit, pots, pans utensils, grill (I have but want someone to carry )
5. Tools, (I have the same kit that Murrie would carry but since he isn't coming I would want someone else to carry) I will carry my specialty tools and supplies (hoses, glues, fluids etc.)
6. Each vehicle should have their own tow strap, however I will carry a full recovery kit.
7. I will bring 1 lantern
8.
? anything else?
Thanks,
Fred
