Bruce, a guy I know from e-mail exchanges about prior trips in the Arizona Strip, will also be coming along. He has already lead a group out there last year and want to come along. He drives a per 2012 JK lifted and equiped.
He will meet us in Mesquite, driving from San Diego. His jeep will be a "trailer queen" for this trip.
We'll try and meet up with him sometime prior to this trip when he's in the Los Angeles area.
He is a member of the forum and if he reads this, Bruce please post on this thread so the guys can start to get and know you.
Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Hi guys!
My name is Bruce Boogaard. I've been married 33 years and have 2 adult children. I live in Bonita, California in San Diego County. We've been here for 30 years, but before that, I've lived in the Los Angeles area since I was 4 (Downey area for the most part), and I went to high school in Whittier (Monte Vista High School) graduating in 1967.
I'm 70 years old. I'm still pretty active physically walking and playing Pickleball almost everyday.
I've been 4 wheeling for 10 years starting when I bought a new 2009 Jeep JKR. Since then, I've been enjoying adding my own modifications to it more as a hobby then out of need. Some of them are a 4" lift, 37" tires. I have a Warn winch, adjustable air bag springs, etc. I sleep in a pop up Ursa Minor roof top tent, which deploys and packs up quickly. More importantly, for this trip, I can carry 56 gallons of gas in three tanks--2 underbody tanks and a spare tire carrier tank.
I'm a bit addicted to electronic gadgetry. You might be a little surprised when you see my dashboard. I have a second battery to operate them.
I'm not a rock crawler. I like to think of myself as an explorer but I want to be prepared in case I come across a difficult obstacle.
I've been to the Arizona Strip 2 times, the first time two years ago by myself and the second time last year when I led a group of 7 friends. I'm absolutely fascinated by the area with its geology, history, vistas and remoteness. I've been to a lot of the vista points and some of the historical sites, and want to see and learn more. I'm particularly interested to get out to Parashant Point and Mollie's Nipple. So far, I've only gotten half way to the Copper Mountain Mine area.
I recognize Fred's expertise on the area and hope to glean more information and understanding of the area from him and the rest of you. He has explained the rigorous schedule that he likes to adhere to, and I think it's great. I'll have no problem complying.
I'm confident that I can be a good participant and appreciate being invited into your group for this trip.
Regards,
Bruce

I'm hoping to be able to go on this trip, but extra fuel is my main problem. I'm assuming you have the Genright auxiliary fuel tank in your JK. I'm in the beginning stages of building my own version of that tank. I have all the parts tracked down, I'm just waiting for a quote on the aluminum required to build the tank. If the pricing on the aluminum is within budget, I'll hopefully start buying all the miscellaneous parts this weekend. Did you install your tank yourself? I'm interested in a copy of the directions to see how they prefer fuel lines to be routed and stuff like that, but they aren't easy to find.
Thanks, Jim

Jim, Yes, it is a 22 gallon Genright aluminum tank, and it has a steel skid plate under it. I had it installed at a mechanics shop down here in El Cajon--Roger Daniels Tires and Brakes--about 2 years ago. I had it installed to handle my first trip to the Arizona Strip. That gave me 42 gallon capacity, but even that isn't enough. They had to cut off and re-route the exhaust pipe downward, and had to cut a hole in the bed of the truck to have access to the top of the tank. They bolted down a cover plate over the hole. They installed a switch near the steering column so that I can select which tank to draw from. The two tanks are joined by some tubing they described as in a "P trap" like configuration so you can fill both tanks from the single filler tube, but the fuel stays isolated in the individual tanks after filling. If you would like, I can send photos, but you are also welcome to come down and inspect the installation if you'd like. I couldn't find the installation instructions online, but here is a link to the JK forum where some guys are discussing the installation: www.jkowners.com/forum/modified-jk-tech-dept/262490-genright-fuel-tank-install.html. Good luck with the project. You must be an excellent welder! Very impressive. Call or text me if I can help further: 619 778 1857. Regards, Bruce PS. I am able to get an additional 14 gallon capacity by installing a Titan Spare Tire Carrier tank.

I have studied the pictures on Genright's web page and have a pretty good grasp of whats required. I'm in Colorado Springs, so I wont be able to head down there unfortunately. I wish I was in California for this project though. Fred has some tools that would make this much easier, but I'll make do with what I have.
As far as my welding? I've only recently welded aluminum, but it went pretty smooth. I've got about an hour or so on a spool gun. I wont be tig welding it because I don't have access to a tig machine. It may not be as pretty as your tank, but I'll pressure test it afterwards and go from there. Hopefully this all works out so I can meet you guys at the trailhead.
Thanks for the link! I'm going to read through it now.
Jim

Fred The fuel cans are manufactured by Tuff Jug , stock photo attached. I have three available , also the wooden rack or "tray" that I built for them to sit in. For more information go to tuffjug.com

Welp, I've run into some pretty significant road blocks. Literally everything I've ordered for this project besides the fuel pump has either had the supplier ship the wrong part or is taking a really long time to get here. I've been waiting 3 weeks for the exhaust kit alone. The Genright fuel pump mount is wrong and no one seems to want to help. All the aluminum that my friend brought me from California is 7075 and 2024. Both of those are not weldable. A new sheet of 5000 series is more than I can afford right now. Heck, I didn't even get the correct wire harness connectors shipped to me from Mouser. I have the correct ones now, but due to constant problems and added cost, I think the tank build is out of the question at this point. Sorry guys, I have no way to carry fuel so I'm gonna have to bow out of this one.
I hope you guys have a wonderful trip, Jim

Fred Fred,
I wish I could find one for a realistic price. Unfortunately, I need the whole set up to support that kind of weight. The fiberglass top can't hold anywhere near that amount. I'd still like to go, and I'll keep trying to figure out a way, but it's not looking good.

Several of the vehicles that have gone just had 4 crimp clamps ( two on each side) and carried 4, 5 gallon cans on top with no problemo. Fred

Fred,
I can't take the risk. There aren't even drip rails on the back of the top. All the weight would be placed on two small sections of fiberglass drip rail above the doors. Even the higher end mounts that actually drill though the top and distribute the load across a larger surface area are rated at super low amounts. The static load of 25 gallons of gas is roughly 150 pounds. I'd have to mount a rack to the roll cage like yours to support the weight. Even the Jeep manual makes a big point of this.
Page 179 of the owners manual: • The hard top is not designed to carry any additional loads such as roof racks, spare tires, building, hunting, or camping supplies, and/or luggage, etc. Also, it was not designed as a structural member of the vehicle, and thus cannot properly carry any additional loads other than environmental (rain, snow, etc.).
The Cherokees/Grand Cherokee's and Cody's Explorer at least have a factory load rating of 100 pounds. Many people put much more on it, but that's metal with factory support rails designed to take loads. JK's have no support at all.
I really want to go on this trip and I'm still trying to figure out options. I have a couple of ideas, but even those wont get me 20 to 25 gallons of extra gas. I wont give up, but I also can't commit unless I know I have the ability to carry the weight.
Thanks, Jim

I knew you'd lime the picture of Cody and his droopy drawer too !
Keep trying and thinking.
Fern is making a small rack that fits into his 2" receiver and will hold 4 - 5 gallon cans. He is going too start fabing it this Saturday.
Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Could four rigs with large enough top racks carry an extra 5 gal for Jim thereby distributing the weight of the added container of gas over the group?
