Smogging the Grand

So I took the grand this past Thursday to have it smogged and registered however it didn't pass smog. Sad day. It passed all the tests except the NoX levels at the 25mph test. The numbers were all on the higher side (HC, CO, and NoX) but it was only the Nox at 25 mph I believe that was at 800ppm instead of 600ppm. The smog guy said it'd need a new oxygen sensor and catalytic converter to pass. I agree that it would pass beautifully with both oxygen sensors and a new cat, however we don't need to pass perfectly, we just need to pass. Given how close we are to passing right now, I think it might pass with just the up stream oxygen sensor. The sensor is $58 for the Bosch OEM replace at AutoZone and about $30 for an off brand. The Bosch can be had online for about $35. Murrie mentioned he has one, but it might not fit our model. I'm not sure how much the cat costs, it has to be CARB compliant, but I think it'd be about $200 to replace. Also I made a mistake in which place I took it to get it smogged and they no longer offer a free restest. The retest is $30


The options (as I see them, feel free to add any) are thus

Replace just the oxygen sensor and risk failing smog again

Replace the cat and oxygen sensor for a cost of around $300 and pass almost certainty.

Try to borrow a Cat and pass with just that.

or find someone to bribe in order to pass.

Since I have an appointment at the DMV to register it this coming Wednesday I was hoping to put the oxygen sensor in on Sunday and try to get it smogged by then.
