The Grand is Officially insured! I spent some time today inspecting and testing and cleaning the grounds for our ZJ. I drove it around and home for a total of about an hour of driving and it never stalled or hesitated once. So perhaps a dirty ground was the issue all along? More time will tell. However driving it has also revealed some more issues!
1.) it doesn't reach proper operating temperature. It hovered around 140F the whole time I drove it which is far too cold for proper operation. The temp was confirmed by a infrared thermometer, so it's not an indication problem. More than likely it is a problem with the thermostat. Also the fan clutch may be a contributing factor.
2.) The heater doesn't work at all. This makes for sad winter driving.
3.) The transmission kick-down/passing gear/throttle-valve (whatever you want to call it) may be out of adjustment. First gear shifts too late under light acceleration. Or maybe the shifts are just really sloppy.
4.) The steering seems to wander. Possibly worn out tie-rod ends and or worn out ball joints, and or worn out steering actuator.
5.) Power steering doesn't work at idle. More than likely it will be fixed by a power steering pump.
6.) The brake fluid is extremely dark. We should bleed the old fluid completely out so it doesn't wreak havoc with the ABS and brake cylinders.

Problems 1 and 6 have been solved! Hurray! This leaves 2 through 5. Next week (or whenever we meet) Matt D will bring a power steering pump and likely fix problem 5 and maybe 4. Which #3 may just be the way it is. This leaves the issue of the heater.
I have done some research and found that unlike the older Cherokees there is no valve that controls hot coolant to the heater core. The heater core receives a constant supply of hot water. Hot air is controlled by an electrically operated flapper in the heater box. These valves are prone to breaking which necessitates pulling the dashboard out and maybe installing a whole new heater box (formally called an HVAC box). Do we care enough to embark on a project of this magnitude?

OK, with the thermostat fixed last night and what appears a fix to the stalling problem by cleaning some grounds.....I started it this morning in the cool air.......it ran for 10 minutes, warmed up nicely without a glich and then all of a suden.......it continued to run just fine with any stalling.........I think we can say it's fixed! No to the other items: Replace th power steering pump, We need Matt to brimg it over. Clean up the interior and exterior. Figure out why no warm air come through when the heater is on. Service the trans. Decide what we are going to do about tires. Thanks all wo did some of the work on it yesterday. Note to all owners....if you haven't paid your $100.00 ownership share, please do as we will be needingt he funds for thetransfer of ownership fees, new fluids and some tires. Thanks, Fred Explorer 1 By the way aren't we not supposed to be here today? ??
