I thought we moved this to the tech section and not fill up the upcoming trips. Fred you suggested that perhaps the heating issue was a head issue? Would a compression test show this? It's having some smog issues so want to see how much money I need to throw at this. Anyone have a cat laying Around?

I'm not sure if a regular compression test would show it. There is another test, involving compression, not sure of the name, which would indicate if the gasket is leaking. An indication would also be excess pressure in the cooling system.

Are you in the shop this week? Thursday's nights are tough but I am on vacation and pretty flexible.

A cylinder leak down test should show a cracked head or bad head gasket.

Are you sure the gauge is accurate? (I have a non-contact thermometer if you want to stop by) Also, there is a dye that is added to the coolant that changes color when hydrocarbons are present. repairpal.com/how-to-test-for-head-gasket-failureMy experience with head gasket failure shows up as coolant loss before overheating occurs. In other words, it takes a pretty good size crack/void to cause overheating and the overheating is caused by the coolant loss not the hot air being injected into the cylinder. Don't rule out Fred's causes, you may have a plugged injector. A lean condition is far more likely to cause overheating.

So I had an ac issue that took most my time. Think I have it. I am going up to big bear for a week next week and plan on seeing how the heating does up the hill and off roading. My next issues is brakes. Any reason brakes would get loose over time? Fred can attest to this after a little heavy braking my brakes don't work as well. I put new rotors and brakes about a year ago. But two weeks ago I was driving down just a few miles from the baldy trail head to the ice house canyon trail head and they were smelling bad and smoking. I am going to pop off the tires to take a look tomorrow maybe during the shop night. But wondering. If anyone has any ideas or if you are free this week to take a look it would be great. I am a mile and a half south of fred.... Pm me and I can get you my cell....

Thank you for the heads up. Although I already know what to do. Been doing it from years now.
