There is an area just this side of Yosemite that I have been visiting since I was a kid. We made a trip last year and hope to go again this year (Augustish). As pretty as Yosemite but no people. We stayed in Fresno Dome Campground. 20+ sites and only one other family was there. You can dry camp but no fires so we stay in the CGs. Hwy 99 to Fresno, 41 north to Fishcamp. Dirt road from there (the Smart car made it with a couple pushes, although the clutch was smoking). The hike to the top of Fresno Dome is a "must do". Lots of four wheel roads and places to explore toward the Iron Lakes area. The down side is the drive. We left Friday after work and arrived at Bass Lake about midnight. We got up Saturday morning, drove in and hiked the dome about lunch time. The hike up the creek out of the campground is really pretty. We had to leave Sunday about 2pm to make it home...8ish. I will post some photos and let everyone know when we have an approx date. We can adust the date to fit everyone's schedule.

Last Thursday night at the trip planning meeting I started beating the "Fresno Dome" drum again. Fred asked for some links and photos so this morning I did a google search. Maybe because this area is so little traveled not much came up, in fact, this fourwheelfreinds thread was the fifth thing to show. I did find this link (kinda old). It has some good photos and a map and an Sprotmobile (for Fred!). autoramblings.com/sportsmobile/?p=558

We now have confired dates and reservations. If anyone would like to join us please let me know. We 9three families so far) are leaving Friday august 21st after work (5ish). First night will be spent at Bass Lake arriving around midnight where a 4th couple from the Bay Area will be joining us. Saturday morning after a quick breakfast we will head into Oakhurst for any last minutes supplies and then up the mountain on hwy 41. At Fishcamp we head east. Some of the group has expressed an interest in horseback riding at a stable that is about an hour in. Depending on time we will hike the Dome after setting up camp in the Fresno Dome campground. No plans beyond that. I would like to make our way into Beasore Meadows and maybe spend Sunday night there. One couple is headed home Sunday, one couple is headed home Monday, the rest of us will be coming back Tuesday. Good group of people, no drinkers or bad language (well, maybe when the top of a knuckle is torn off). Message here or send me an email: markdickens2000@yahoo.com

I am still interested in this trip. Convinced the wife to come with kiddos as a late birthday present. But my jeep is still getting hot. What will the temperatures be on the trail? How hard? Should I bring my wife's stock Cherokee instead?

So far the trip will be just exploring on good dirt roads, no hard 4wd stuff. I will contact you tonight with all the details, or if you prefer stopping by the house?
