Two 4x4 friends and I went to the El Paso Mtns, and camped at Holland Camp, as well as wheeled in Last Chance, Goler Gulch, and Iron Cyn. We left the Antelope Valley Thursday Evening, about 5 pm, headed for Mojave, and gas and final ice and potty stop. Arriving at the bottom of Iron Cyn, at Garlock-Randsburg Road, we dropped the air pressure, and headed up canyon in the dark!! EEEEK! This is not too much fun when you are dragging an off road trailer with a 4 popper 2.4!! Lots of gear changes, and lots of "pucker factor" later, we arrived at Holland Camp. This camp used to be a transfer station, and gold/silver assay point from the 1890's to about 1930. Then, it fell into disuse until after WW2, when the need for precious metals made the search out there more profitable. Bill, in his red YJ Jeep, Dave in his XJ Cherokee, and I in my silver TJ, with the camoflage trailer were all set for this trip to relax, look at some stars, eat a LOT of BBQ chicken, pork steaks, and bisquits and gravy with hash and pork links every morning! ( Yeah, lots of cholestrol, and fat!!). We camped literally inside the old ruins of the abandoned camp, and set up the privy in a small shower tent. We also found a couple of unmarked graves just a few feet from the roadway by the ruins.... After bfast on Friday, we loaded up the jeeps, and headed off to find Sheep Springs, and the sheep spring mine.

As I mentioned, this area is literally dotted with old mines, many very dangerous vertical shafts, and most are NOT MARKED. So....be very aware of where you drive, and where you walk. do not be fooled by the seemingly light inside these mines. The flash on my Canon Camera, is very strong, and lit them up. using just a flashlight, we almost walked into the pit that you see Dave looking into!! As well, the smell of wet earth shows that there is a lot of CO2, and CO in these places, so you must NOT go too deep in for fear of lack of O2. yeah, I about creamed my pants, when a bunch of bats flew out of one mine we looked into, but did not go into. This country is really beautiful, and far from the dirt bags, and noise of the cities we live in and near.
