There were three "issues" with my old XJ that needed to be dealt with: 1. Replace the fuel pump so we could even start and move the vehicle. 2. Remove and send the Third member (Differential) back to Currie Enterprises to figure out why it leaks. 3. Replace the lifters in the engine as one is make lots of racket. Over the past weeks I have replaced the fuel pump so now at least the engine will start. Then came the removal of the front differential and the drive out to Currie, now in Corona. Since the gears were out I decided to fab my own diff guard out of some 1/4" plate I had laying around. It looks a bit Frankensteinish but will protect the diff when I come in contact with those big rocks like the one on John Bull trail the put a good size dimple in my pumpkin. Currie returned the rebuilt Third Member, I then went about replacing all the axles, brakes, drive shafts and such putting it all back together. While doing this I decided to lube all the joints on the front end before I put on the tires and move to project 3, replacing the lifters. While looking at the front suspension and doing the lube job I came across this sorry sight. Some of you might remember a few years ago a problem I had at Caruthers Canyon when I broke off the upper control arm on the driver's side and we had to do a "in the field" temporary weld repair to limp the Cherokee back home. Well the same thing is now happening on the other side.........the woes of uni-body and an over built suspension. Looks like it will be a while longer before Explorer 1 make it way back out on the trails. Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Sounds like some long arms would be an easier fix (and an upgrade) to this problem. I'd recommend the poly performance 3 link kit although it might be hard to find something bolt in because of your custom crossmember/crawlbox setup.

The idea of a long arm system is probably unavoidable sometime in the future. The problem is that my XJ has been so modified no off the shelf system will fit without lots of modifications not only to my frame rails but possibly to the long arm system also. I really want to move on to replacing the lifters in the engine and put this rig back on the trail. It's been down since early December. So for now I opted for the "easier" method and fabed an additional bracing "gusset" to where the uni-body held the control arm. Fortunately, unlike my other side which tore the control arm bracket completely away from the frame rail, this side was caught early when only the rear part of the bracket has started to tear away. I could tell that this was caused by the extreme flexing of the control arm not so much from the weight of the axle. Step one was to clean out the tear and then press it back as close as I could to it's original position before I put a bead of welding over and in the crack. Welding was very awkward, there isn't much room for the wand and with the welding helmet on it was difficult to get my head up where I could see where I was welding. Step 2 was to take some 1/4" metal cut and bend it to get some additional support to the bracket. I used a small piece of 14 gauge metal to box in the angle and act as a mild gusset. Time to weld. Now the angles were really difficult but with some contorting of my arms and with a few weld burns down my sleeves I managed to get a few good welds. Now there all primed up and ready for a final coat of rust protector. Hopefully, Tomorrow I'll be able to get the control arm back in an re-install the springs and track bar. Thanks, Fred Explorer 1
