I've ordered a newer timing light and while I was at it, I also ordered a remote starter and a spark tester so we don't have to pull the plug and ground it nay more. All should be here this Monday. I notice that once the day warmed up the 7-11 started leaking water and it looks like it's coming from the weep hold on the water pump. So those of you who suggested that before we put the engine in we replace the pump, it looks like you were right. We'll see upon closer examination. I've tried to start it several more times, When I hold the gas pedal down all the way and turn it over it starts up but immediately then dies. We may need to check the compression too. I sure hope we didn't get stuck with a lemon engine! I'm still believing it's something simple we missed when we put to back together. Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

First things first, we need to index the distributor @ #1 cylinder TDC before anything. The engine runs very much like it is a tooth off. A compression check is a good idea just to know how our "new" engine is doing.
Bummer on the water pump, should be a simple replacement as many of us have done multiple replacements

Should we hold off on the water pump until we check compression and timing to make sure we're keeping this engine?

Should we hold off on the water pump until we check compression and timing to make sure we're keeping this engine? Yep, let's just get it running smooth and then we'll address the other smaller items. Thanks, Fred
