Our annual Mojave road trip is coming up, but this year it will be the weekend of December 9, 10 & 11th.
We have some "First Timers" coming so I will be giving them a slower more thorough "tour" of the trail. So depending on how many vehicles come and your desire to go on a slower tour, we may divide into two groups.
We'll plan on camping at the same two spots, just might arrive a little later.
We'll leave from the Ralph Market ( corner Colima and Whittier Blvd) at 5 am sharp Friday morning. We will stop for breakfast along the way.
Ladies are allowed on this trip.
If you want to come please add your name to this THREAD.
Also, if you're new to off roading or this trail and want to reserve your spot with my group, let me know.
The Mojave Road is a excellent three day two night trip to gain experience on a moderate trail, complete with sandy areas, minor rocky parts and all that makes this a fun fun trail. There are also willing helpers (coaches).
Also, if you need help with your menu and what equipment to bring, let me now, best not to overpack!
Thanks,
Fred Explorer 1

Just to confirm…the latest project Jeep ZJ, Zane and I will be going thanks to the amazing support of Fred, Fernando and Rudi! I know you guys are shy and don’t like a bunch of adulation…nevertheless, we couldn’t do this without you. Looking forward to the trip!

It looks like we may have a good size group this year including a number of "newbees". That's good news because much of that which we take for granted traveling the trail so many times again come new when we have first timers with us.
Here is a loosely put together schedule of the three days.
1. LEAVE the parking lot of Ralphs Market at the corner of Whittier Blvd and Colima at 5 am sharp. If you need to meet someone there or move some equipment from one vehicle to another come early. If you arrive an no one is there, we've already left and you can catch up with us on the way. Look below on the route we're taking to know where to find us. Show up with a full tank of gas. We will stop along the way for fuel ups and also right before we hit dirt on the trail.
2. We will travel out and stop for breakfast along the way at the Denny's restaurant, Lynwood Exit off the I -15 inn Barstow.
3. At the AVI Casino on the Colorado River we will make our final fuel up and pick up any last minute items at the store there.
4. We'll travel on the Mojave Trail, stopping at certain points of interest most the late morning and early afternoon.
5. We'll leave the Mojave Trail and travel up into the New York Mountains in the afternoon the what I believe is called Pinto Canyon off of the New York Mountain rd. It's the place we've camped in the past several year.
6. Next morning we'll aim for being on the road by 8am and head back to the Mojave Trail traveling with interest points along the way.
7. We'll arrive at Shaw Pass for Saturday night. Here is where there will be shooting of firearms for those interested. The weather is usually very pleasant and we enjoy a extended evening around the fire.
8. Sunday morning is our "Big Breakfast" morning usually the guys bring, eggs, bacon, hash browns and lots of butter. As with all meals its your choice. Usually, we're on the trail again before 9 am. (we travel through the Mojave River wash (Sandy) and into Afton Canyon (The Grand Canyon of the Mojave Desert) and depending on the amount of rain fall we travel through the canyon besides the Mojave River. There is a possible stop to hike up Spooky Canyon and two river crossing before we arrive at Afton Canyon Campground where we stop for those who want to us a public bathroom, (Pit toilet).
9. We continue traveling on the Mojave Trail following in the Mojave River wash and come out on Interstate 15, roughly 25 miles from Barstow.
Usually, depending on what time we get on the Interstate we stop at In & Out Burgers for an early dinner and time of sharing some of our pictures and movies.
Next post will be things to bring:
Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Most of those who have attended the Mojave Road know what to bring.
For those who are coming for the first time:
1. If each vehicle brings one box of firewood we should be good for the Friday night, Saturday morning, Saturday night and Sunday morning campfires. If you have room and want to bring more please feel the freedom to do so.
2. Each vehicle should have it's own tow strap, kept in a easy to pull out location in their vehicle. It is highly advisable that each vehicle have a front and rear tow point where either a strap with a "D" ring can be attached.
3. Each vehicle should have a full size spare tire in good condition, you should also have the tools and jack to change your own tire.
4. We will air down our tires when we hit dirt Friday morning and will leave them aired down until we hit pavement again Sunday afternoon. You should have your own electric air pump that you can use to air your tires back up. If you new and don't have a air pump, I'm sure one of the guys will be available to help you out.
5. Each vehicle should have a 2 meter ham radio unit, this way we can communicate with you on the trail, we monitor 147.555 as our frequency.
6. Each individual should have their own chair, preferability not the umbrella type that opens up and takes a lot of room. The more traditional folding chair allows more of us to sit around the campfire.
7. Your welcome to bring some tools but the more experienced guys in the group bring just about every tool we need for a trail fix.
8. If your putting off fixing something on your vehicle do it before the trip, The three days of off roading have a way of breaking things waiting to be fixed.
9. You are on your own for all meals, snacks and drinks. I'll get more into meals on my next post.
Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Meals will be as follows:
Friday:
Breakfast - on the road at Denny's in Barstow
Lunch - Will be on the trail, simple no cooking meal
Dinner - At camp, around a campfire, your welcome to bring a stove buy most guys cook their red meat on the grill over a wood fire.
Saturday:
Breakfast - Simple meal, hot water will be warmed at the morning fire. I usually get up early and have hot water for my morning "candy coffee".
Lunch - See Friday lunch above
Dinner - See Friday dinner above.
Sunday:
Breakfast - Big Breakfast, what ever you like , we will have a fire ad a grill available.
Lunch - See lunches above.
A word about water and liquids, there are no reliable sources of water once we leave AVI Casino at the Colorado River. You must be self reliant the entire trip. Please don't bring a prepackage box of smaller water bottles. Bring a larger container at least 1 gallon size and refill your small water container. If you bring 3 gallons per person you should have much more than you need of water.
Sanitation: Because we have some ladies coming on this trip, only 2 that I know of, when it come to reliving yourself of excess water, you can do it just about anywhere, just look where the ladies are first. As for more solid matter, there are usually several of us that take small shovels. I recommend that each person carry with them a small zip lock baggy with 2 or three small tissue packages, and a small package of moist wipes. Each zip lock bag should also have a small bic type lighter. After making your deposit and completing the "paper work" if you would burn the paper, as much as would burn, you will be accelerating the decay process. Its the unused paper that takes years to decay in the dry desert.
I will be out of town Thursday - Sunday so if you have any questions you can write them as a response on this thread and I'll get back in touch with you Monday.
Should be a good trip,
Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

One more thing for all the new guys to keep in mind.
Keep your camp simple, you'll only be at each camp site one night and you want set up and tear down to be as simple as possible.
If it turns out that you really enjoy this kind of trip, observe the more experience guys in the group and what they bring and how they set up their camp.
This is a group of mostly guys, they are a great bunch, if you need help, don't be embarrassed, ASK and you'll see how quickly they help out.
Thanks, Fred Explorer 1
