I'm going to get out of "Dodge" up to where it is cooler.
Short notice, but I'll go it alone if no one is able to come along.
For years I'm been reading about the Western Sierra's and some outstanding trails at higher elevations.
I've never been anywhere near these, so all I have to go by is what my trail books list.
East of Fresno Ca is Shaffer Lake. Near Shaffer lake are some challenging trails. I've narrowed my choice to the spurs that lead to Mirror Lake, Strawberry Lake and Coyote Lake.
All start off of Hwy 168 northeast of Shaffer Lake and provide camping spots along the way and at each lake. (Primitive camp spots)
All have some difficult sections.
The trails would be in the 6-7000' elevation range.
The longest trail is only 3.8 miles but the book says give yourself 2-3 hours travel time, one way. This means there will be a lot of slow travel and plenty of challenges.
Let me know if your game for coming. Shaffer lake is about as far away as Bishop is from Whittier which is a 5 hours drive.
I'd want to leave early to avoid traffic so no later than 5 am. We would camp Friday and Saturday, make it home Sunday.

This is a great area to off road with such a variety of trails.
I'm surprised we don't have more interest!
There will only be regrets from those who don't come along.

This trip will cover some sections of what "may be" near the most difficult obstacles some of you have driven.
I would recommend you travel as light as possible and leave at home some of the "extras" so your vehicle will be light. I am leaving my roof rack and RTT at home, (partly because I already have them off due to some repairs) and I don't want to top side height and weight as I do these trails.

Fred, What about fire wood for this trip? I have 6x6, 6x8 I can bring for fire wood and road engineering. Also do you me to bring my Harbor Freight tool kit? Can Rudy carry any impacts? Murrie

Murrie I'm checking into campfire regulations. I may bring my propane BBQ as there may be a No open fire reg in place. Let you know, it may also depend on wither we camp in a regular campground or do an "open camping" choice. I'm sure Rudi can handle the impacts and yet bring the tools. Thanks, Fred

Some final details. This is a middle of summer trip and we'll have summer long days and weather. It will most likely be in the lower 80's during the heart of the day and the night in the lower 60's so no cold weather clothes or sleeping bags. Those sleeping in their cars might want to being some kind of screening material so you can sleep with you windows open and not have to feed the mosquitos. There is a strict "no campfire" restriction in place as far as I can tell, so I'm bringing my portable propane BBQ unit. Since the sun stays up so late this time of the year, we'll get by with sitting around camp with a lantern. For those who want to know where you're going you can tell them northeast of Fresno in the Shaver Lake area. If all goes well we'll do the following trails; Mirror Lake - rated difficult - 1.4 miles long - figure 1.5 hours there an back. Strawberry Lake - rated difficult - 1.7 miles - 1.5 miles there and back. Coyote Lake - Rated difficult - 3.8 miles - 2-3 hours one way, 4 to 6 hours round trip. Because of the fire restrictions we will not be bringing any firewood on this trip. You should bring your own tow strap and prepare to take your time over the numerous obstacles. Friday We'll eat breakfast on the way up, but may have lunch on the trail. Saturday Breakfast in camp lunch on the trail, dinner in our next camp. Sunday, Breakfast in camp, Lunch may be on the trail, dinner in route on the way home. We're leaving my house Friday 4:30 sharp. We want to get there and on one of the trails or to the first lake by nightfall. One more thing, there may be a fair amount of biting bugs out so be prepared. Any questions? Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Fred,
I will be bringing my cook kit with the stacking pans, coffee pot, and utensils roll up (like yours). I will bring my small propane hibachi grill too, about 9" x 15". I will bring my Harbor Freight 300 piece tool kit and Rudi can carry my Impacts tool box (35 lbs). I also will carry my spare parts tool box with a water pump and power steering pump.
Jim,
You can ride with me on the trails. I do not have working air conditioning in Smurf so the ride up will might be warm but you are welcome to ride with me up also. If you need a tent, air mattress, and sleeping bag I have those you can use. Let me know.
Look forward to seeing you all.
