Here is the place to put your comments, pictures and movies of the recent Utah trip we took called, Koko 3. All I have are the pictures and movies I took. I know some of your took some great shots and footage of the trip so if you get them to me I can edit them and post them. Best medium would be a SD or Memory stick if you don't want to post them yourself. I think we'll be talking about the weather for some time on this trip, besides the rain and cold (and the snow we just missed by one trail day) there was more of an element of "wilderness" on this trip almost similar to our Arizona Strip/North Rim of the Grand Canyon trips. Here are a few pictures to enjoy: More later, Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Day 1 We left Whittier early, real early. I wanted to get to Green River Utah early enough to make camp and enjoy an evening around a camp fire. Driving east we lost an hour. I've used Green River State park on other trips and besides always having campsite available, they have hot showers. The park is right on the river and is the put in point for those wanting to float down the Green and either take out at Mineral Bottom or go all the way down to the confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers. Mina gave me one good picture of Bodie, one of the Bikers that evening checking out the river just before sunset. Now that I think about it, it was actually sunrise! After a pleasant but cooler and damper night at the park we headed over to Moab to secure our provisions for the next 9 days on the trail. This would include topping off our fuel tanks and filling the extra 10+ gallons and filling several water containers. After lunch the bikers had a shake down day trip on the double black diamond Porcupine Rim trail. Mark at one point did an over the bars head first tumble, but walked away with only a bloody nose and some bruises. Later that same day we traveled out along the Colorado River on Kane Creek road to one of the many campgrounds along the road for our first night "on the trail". It would also be our last night where we had a few amenities or comforts such as pit toilets, fire rings and picnic tables. The evening and night was cooler than usual (which was a sign of things to come) and the next morning the bikers would start their 200+ mile wilderness journey. Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Day 3 Day 3 found both the bikers, made up of Mark Saucy and Bodie Garside and the support vehicles, made up of myself, Murrie and Mike Alcorn and Rudi Wiens heading out on dirt for the first time together. This trip is a two part journey taking the Hayduke trail, (Mountain Bike version) from Moab Utah to Big Water Utah. Big Water is at best a small village on the northern shore of Lake Powell just as before the lake moves into Arizona on Hwy 89. The Mountain Bike version is over 400 miles long so we broke it into two trips, this one being the northern section following a number of jeep trail from Moab to a remote and obscure road junction of the Poison Springs canyon road and Highway 95 north of Hite Utah. In our planning it's always difficult to figure out ahead of time what are appropriate camping stops for the bikers. I have driven the trail in my Jeep and had some idea of what I thought might work but slight grades in a Jeep where I wouldn't notice any substantial climb are a completely different thing to those peddling. Here are two maps showing the grade and mileage of the first couple of days on the trail. The trail "offical" start, McDonald's in Moab to the Lockhart Basin trail ending on Hwy 211. They are shown in the Red and Black lines on the map. We started about 9 miles in from the McDonalds. There is some very scenic sections along the beginning which all enjoyed. This section supplied the only "difficult" rated section for the vehicles. The narrow canyon leading into Lockhart Basin wouldn't be on the higher end of the scale compared to other difficult Moab trails, but we weren't driving extremely modified vehicles, some barely above "stock". In addition we were heavily loaded with equipment, food, water and fuel for the next 9 trail days. While the bikers just dismounted and walked over the most difficult sections we had to wheel them. Needless to say the bikers got several miles ahead of us as we struggled up the canyon. For some reason no one took any pictures of our slow progress up the difficult section. They did take some movies so here is a couple different perspectives. Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Day 3 continued Once over Hurrah Pass and through the difficult "gate keeper" Lockhart entry canyon, the trail opened up to the vast Lockhart Basin following olong the edge of the Colorado River. Hurrah Pass: I can't believe I don't have a picture of the vastness of Lockhart Basin, best I can do is our camp spot about 1/2 way through where we spent the night that evening. Some of you who went on this trip may remember me telling you about a pile of scrap metal that once was a trailer. I believe it was either a ranchers or Shepards trailer from years ago. Over the past decade or so it has be shot, dragged and ran over by the off road community. While looking for a picture of Lockhart Basin I can across a picture of what the trailer looked like the first time I saw it, years ago. The bikers put some good mileage on this day but not without some complaining from the senior member.

Hahaha! There was just one witness to the epic face plant, and he's sworn to secrecy about how it all went down! It is hilarious. Almost as good as Ben's on Koko I!

Day 4 Morning came and the air was cold/crisp depending on wither you were sensing it from being next to a fire or from being behind a set of handle bars. We lingered around the morning fire and took our time breaking camp. I think there was some desire to at least have the sun show itself over the eastern horizon before the bikers started that morning. Once they felt the warmth of the sun on their faces the headed off down the trail to complete the second part of the Lockhart Basin trail. The black line is the Lockhart Basin trail. We were at the beginning of the day about 1/3 of the way. But the first part had the most uphills and was rated as difficult so we were expecting to make the pavement, where this section ended, by lunch.
