The new 7-11 Grand arrived and was quickly ushered into ER. It was considered by some DOA, but others of us have hope, maybe just a fools hope, but still hope. We'll be performing a full compression check and trying to determine if the problem is the upper end (valves, head) or the lower end (Rings). Once that is done the decision will be made to rebuild the head or go for a full transplant., (engine swap). No shop this next Thursday. The following Thursday is the day before we leave on the Mojave Trail so no shop night then either. Thanks, Fred

Matt, go see it and if it's good grab it, I'll pay for it.
I do wonder which year we're talking about?

I pick up an extension to my compression tester tomorrow am. I'll try and run all 6 and see what the readings are. Fred

Here are the results: 1 - 85 psi 2 - 80 psi 3 - 62 psi 4 - 75 psi 5 - 55 psi 6 - 80 psi I couldn't find in the shop manual what a new engine should register. All seem low to me. Next we'll need to do a wet test with some oil inserted into the cylinder and then take another reading. So the fixing adventure begins.................................. Thanks, Fred

Yep, do the wet test and that will tell us rings or valves. We can also do a cylinder leak down test to confirm

It appears that the "new" Grand is in need of a major engine transplant. We're on the lookout for a lower mileage 4.0 that we can transfer. It will need to be near the build year, 1997, so we won't run into any compatibility problems. We have a couple of lead that we're working on.
Thanks, Fred Explorer 3

Ask him when we can come and see it along with start the engine, If it runs well, we'll but it and I'll trailer it over to the house. Thanks, Ryan for keeping an eye open. Fred

I wouldn't buy an unsealed motor from an unknown source. Swapping a motor just to find out if it runs is risky. Buy it from a known running vehicle.
Also, I wasnt feeling too well the last time I was there so i missed the leak down test. What did we determine? Were all 6 cylinders tested? What was the leak percentage? Were was it leaking? Are ya working on it this thursday? I'll be at the shop but I can swing by after.

The plan is to pull off the valve cover and do some more testing before we decide to pull the head or go for another engine.
Yes, we will be open the day after Christmas and I think some guys are coming early, how early? I don't know. I also have the new JK here now, I picked it up on Monday.
Merry Christmas,
