Last time we tried to do his trail we were stopped at the last minute by a forest fire.
We're going to try again this September.
I've scheduled the work week of September 16 - 20th.
We would probably leave on Saturday Sept 14th and take two days to get to the trailhead, camping on the eastern Sierra's somewhere.
Allow 3-4 days on the trail and then two days to get home.
I will most likely drive up my Tundra, flat towing the XJ.
Do you want to come, are you going to plan on coming?
I'd like at least one other vehicle to come to help me spot on any more difficult options.
I may never do this trail again so, if you have this trail on your list to do. Start planning.
Let me know if you plan on coming.
Thanks, Fred

I plan on coming but will take the go-arounds in those sections that are not advisable for the FrankenTaco's wheel base. Will you be having a pre-trip meeting?

Rubicon update:
Interest is peaking on doing this trail!
1. Some of you that would like to do the trail are making repairs/improvements' to your vehicle. Be sure to get them done and then tested on some difficult local trail before this trip. This is not the trip where you ant to test your repairs/improvements only to find out 400 miles from home you need additional work on your "improvements".
2. My shop will be available for any going that want to do maintenance, repairs, on the lift inspection, improvements. Let me know if you want to come over during the week and I'll see what dates works for both of us.
3. If you have not done both Holcomb and Dishpan trail successfully, you will need to do them before this trip. Again, I'm available to accompany you but would prefer to do these trail on a week day instead of a week end. We can leave early and have them done usually by lunch time. Requiring you do these trail is for your benefit. If you have a very difficult on these trails or even a miserable time doing them, you will really be challenged and miserable doing the Rubicon.
4. We will leave very early on Saturday 14th, travel up Hwy 395 and most likely camp on a trail north of Bridgeport. Day two we will travel up to the the finishing staging area of the Rubicon trail where I along with any other towing vehicles, will leave our towing vehicle, From here we will travel south and west to the western starting point of the Rubicon trail near Loon Lake. Plans are to camp here and get an early start on the trail Monday.
5. My trail book describes the actual trail as 18.6 miles with 10 of those miles as very difficult. It says the trail "can" be driven in one day but most use 2 days. I'm planning 3 days........
6. There are lots of pit toilets available along the trail.
7. Currently campfires are allowed on the trail but this can change, so I'll post right before the trip the current fire conditions.
8. Once I have a solid confirmed idea who is actually going we'll decide what tools and group equipment we will be bringing.
9. As you know, one week before we were going to do this trail last year a fire closed it. This year I'm making an alternative group of difficult trails in the Sierra's that are equally challenging and scenic we will do if they close the Rubicon.
Any questions at this point?
Thanks,
Fred Explorer 1

I've done Dishpan twice, 1st time got stuck at the end on stock 31's and no lift, 2nd time no issues on 33's and 2.5" lift with good spotting by Fern. I've not done John Bull or Holcomb on the advise of others due to FrankenTaco's wheel base. I've watched YouTubes of 2nd gen Tacoma Quad Cabs on 33's (couldn't tell how much lift) doing the Rubicon and it seems if you go slow with good spotting, it's doable. Apparently there are go-arounds (albeit not much easier) for Little Sluice and Soup Bowl, but not Big Sluice. If your expert opinion is FrankenTaco shouldn't attempt the trail, let me know. I don't want to be a drag on the party because trail repairs for the Toyota aren't like that for your Jeep rigs.

Hi All, I am a definite maybe for the trip, waffling between it being a "bucket list" adventure of a lifetime and not wanting to trash my daily driver. But the JKURR will be 7 in October so I think it is time to get back out there even if it leads to some bumps and bruises. Besides, I haven't been on an extended trip with the group since AZ Strip in March 2020. And while I can't yet commit to the Rubicon Trail, I'd like to do a midweek, 1/2 day local prep/training thing to confirm I'm able and want to do 18 miles of mostly rock crawling. My schedule is a bit busy but the dates in August that could work are the 8th, 15th, 16th, 19th, 20th, 29th and 30th. Hope that works for those in the group that need to pass the difficult local trail test.

Hey All,
I’ve got Aug. 20th or 23rd as the only week days to squeeze in the training day. That’s if the jeep is ready. I’ll know more next week so please don’t wait on me to schedule.

Great opportunity to test my jeep with re-gearing and ARB Locker

Tuesday, August 20th is a go for Dishpan and Holcomb for those wanting to go on the Rubicon Trail in September.
Let me know if you want to go on this day trip. We'll leave early ( my house at 5 am) and get back early in the afternoon.
All are invited, you don't have to go on t he Rubicon to enjoy or lean more about rock crawling. All welcome.
Thanks, Fred
