I am driving up to Coyote Flats to check out road and camp conditions for the August Father son camp out in August.
I need to get up there right away so I can verify the location and start taking sign up for the August trip.
I can go up either of these two week ends.
June 30th - July 1st (Friday, Saturday)
or
July 7th - 8th (Friday , Saturday)
If you've been to Coyote Flats you know what a great spot it is high in the Eastern Sierra Mountains, next to Baker Creek. There are some great moderate trails to follow up out of Bishop to some rather idea camping spots.
We'll drive up, check out the trail and the various camping spots and then spend the night, driving home the next day Saturday.
All are welcome, including the daughters and spouses. Mina plans on coming too.
I need to hear which date works for you so I can make a decision when we'll go.
Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

Would love to go but limited right now on my schedule. How early on either Friday are you thinking? Coyote Flats is east of Bishop California. It's a full days drive there, and as usual I like to "get out of Dodge" so to speak early and beat the traffic. SO I'm planning a 5 am departure for the exploring trip. Thanks, Fred

OK we have final dates:
Friday July 7th and Saturday July 8th.
We'll leave early, 5am from Ralphs Market, Colima and Whittier Blvd. And then return some time late afternoon or early evening Saturday.

Its going to be a warm in the drive through the high desert and climbing out of Bishop!
We'll leave early to try and beat some of the heat and traffic, 5 am at Ralphs.
There is a chance that the road may still be closed or we may not be able to get through.
Some other considerations would be Cottonwood Canyon is the White mountains or Pappose Flats in the Inyo Mountains.
We'll make decisions "on the fly" so to speak.
No extra fuel is needed, we'll top off our tanks just before we hit dirt and that will be enough for the trip in and out and any exploring.
Thanks, Fred Explorer 1

You only should plan on Dinner Friday and breakfast Saturday meal for this trip.
We'll stop at Kramer corner for gas, coffee and a quick 2nd breakfast on the road, then we'll fill up again an the reservation gas station near Independence. We'll visit Schats bakery for either s sit down lunch or a sandwich for the trail up. We will top off our tanks just before we leave pavement.
After a leisurely breakfast Sunday we'll head for home having lunch somewhere on the road.
Of course all the above is subject to trail conditions.
Thanks, Fred

Fred,
I just got on the Inyo National Forest web site.
The following roads will be closed via Forest Closure Order from June 15 - September 30, 2023:
Forest Road 7S10 (Coyote Flat/Valley Road from Bishop, closed just past kiosk)
“Although Coyote Flats Road has been worked on recently, they remain closed at this time due to heavy equipment still working in the area, and are planning to haul road fill material in soon.”
There is also sensitive meadow and spring habitat areas that need to dry out more before the public can access where Coyote Flats Road crosses these areas to avoid damaging resources.
“We hope to have Coyote Flats Road open within the next three weeks.” Wiese continued. “As for Wyman Canyon and Silver Canyon Roads, Southern California Edison is currently working on temporary fixes.”
This was posted on June 15th so hopefully the road will be opened.
Murrie

As of now, Wednesday, the Coyote Flats road out of Bishop is closed. So as an alternative for this Friday and Saturday we will travel to Papoose Flats is the Inyo Mountain range. The trail we choose to take will be out of Independence not Bishop. We will fuel up just north of Independence at the Indian owned gas station, then double back to Independence to the "port of Subs" sandwich shop for our lunch. If its too early for lunch we'll take our sandwich with us and stop somewhere along the trail. In route from Whittier, we'll stop at Kramer Corner for gas (Hwy 58 and 395) and some sort of quick breakfast, the proceed north on 395 toward Independence. Papoose Flats is at 8400' elevation, hopefully cool and away from the heat in the valley below. There will not be as much available wood at Papoose Flats so if a few of you bring some wood that will allow us a decent fire Friday night and Saturday morning. Any questions??? Thanks, Fred Explorer 1
